I’m Not Sure that Counts
Zane: Hey, Dad? Can we start going to church a little more often?
Me: Well, sure. I suppose that wouldn’t be such a bad thing. Why do you ask, though?
Zane: Because, Lent starts tomorrow and I just thought it would be a good thing to do for Lent.
Me: (Thinking about what a good kid he is.) You’re absolutely right. We should make an effort to go to church more often. So Lent, huh?
Zane: Yeah.
Me: So, Zane—-What are you giving up for Lent?
Zane: (Pausing just a moment to think, looked up with a sincere smile and proudly announced…) CARROTS!

Brilliant, conniving young mind…
Mine was cabbage!
I always give up the same thing . . .
Arnold Schwarzenegger movies!
I like the way he thinks. Me, I am giving up brussel sprouts.
Zane is brilliant. I think I’m going to give up…Facebook. Oh wait, that’s too difficult. I know, how about working. That sounds like a winner.
Too funny. I see he’s got his dad’s sense of humor.
Karen MEG–He’s a sharp one, that kid!
XBox–Good idea.
tysdaddy–I though about canceling our cable. Then I remembered–I’m not Catholic–what am I thinking!
Kami–Even better than cabbage. Know what’s worse than warm Brussels Sprouts? COLD Brussels Sprouts–I know from experience.
VegasDad–Brilliance a Zane trait.
Jeff–He’s way too much like me.
Clare suggested that she could give up homework. I nixed that idea.
I like the way she thinks. Homework is harder on me than it is the kids!
I may not be an expert, but I don’t think it works like that… Unless he really really likes carrots.
I was thinking abt going to mass too. But mainly to get my kid in a good school. Ssssh. Don’t tell folks I am a bad Catholic.
Such sacrifice your kid is willing to make. Maybe he’ll become a monk
Frigga–I think when I look back on the conversation–he really was being serious–the boy likes his carrots. I still told him he couldn’t give up vegetables for Lent.
Nola–You do what you’ve got to do to get your kids a good education–that’s ultimate sacrifice.
sounds like a plan. I’m giving up doing the laundry for lent.
I’d be lost under the mounds in less than 4 days!
Ha! Smart kiddo!!!!
I think it says something that kids are so open to going to church at that age. It’s a beautiful gift; faith. Mark’s mom always says she’s giving up watermelon and swimming. (we have four feet of snow on the ground, and she HATES water). See you in church!
Smart kid, lol. I tried to explain Lent to a 4 and 6 year old but it didn’t go very well. I’ll try again next year.
Oh that is outstanding! I should have given up carrots, too!
Maureen–Too smart–for my own good!
Mrs. 4444–Remarkably, they all do very well during the services. Start em young, I guess.
OHmommy–I couldn’t explain it if I wanted to. Zane did a fairly decent job of explaining it to me though.
Angel–I would have picked a lesser veggie.
