“Could I have another zwer-wink, please?”

“Zander.  It’s a D.  Say it.  Dah  Dah  Dah.  Dah-Rink.”

“Zwer–”

“No!  Dah.  Dah.  D.  Say the D.”

Zander has problems with diction.  Certain letters and words he is just unable to articulate correctly.  I blame his fingers.  Namely the fact that he continues to suck them and essentially has learned to speak with his fingers in his mouth.  His tongue is so used to forming words around the fingers that even when he takes them out–you can’t tell the difference.

It drives me nuts!

And so went our little lesson this evening during dinner.  He wanted another drink and I wanted him to pronounce the word correctly.  We tried.

And tried.

“Dah—-rink.  Dah–rink.  Dah-rink.”  I tried to get him to repeat it with me.

“Dih Dih Dih,” he forced from his lips.

Zoë chimed in, an attempt to help. “You could say  der—rink!.  Der.  Der.  Der.  Der—rink.”

“Or you could just say——drink!”  Zia offered clearly fed up with the whole exercise.  “Just give him some more milk, Dad.”

My son was similar. Three years of speech therapy later, he can say D with the best of them.

To be fair though, it was pretty much inevitable that your kids would end up with a propensity to say the letter Z a lot

At the beginning of second grade, they noticed at school that MY Zoe was having “pwoblems” with the letter R. So she spent a portion of the year in speech, sucking on Dum Dums. Now, Rs are no “problem”.

    Hang in there . . .

This reminds me of something a kid wrote years ago that took me a while to figure out. The word was “grenk,” as in jerink, as in DRINK.

    Good luck with that one…

    Dan stole my comment.

she sounds like a no nonsense girl.

Lukas has us scratching our heads a lot these days too, asking for things. It is a fun game to try to figure out what he is saying. But I’m sure you have been there multiple times.

Ha, Dan’s comment made me laugh. He’s got a point, you know?

“just give him some more milk Dad.” Apparently the kids have different buttons than the grown ups!

Well, with enough teachers around the table he’ll eventually get it. So cute of Zoe to chime in!

Ha! Yeah, Dan stole MY comment too (serves me right for being away so long). Your family uses more Z’s in one day than most do in a lifetime!

Shoot, I can’t even get Sun to say ‘milk’! Now I’m thirsty.
