I Think I’m Gonna Take a Personal Day

Thirty minutes makes a huge difference. Huge! What am I saying? Five minutes makes a huge difference.

Fall back. We got to set our clocks back this past weekend and for some inexplicable reason, I only fell back 55 minutes. I gained and hour and couldn’t figure out for the life of me why I was still running behind everywhere I went.

I dawned on me Wednesday that my watch was wrong. I reset the dang thing but again, incorrectly. I was now five minutes early everywhere I went. Not that being early is such a bad thing but five extra minutes to a three year old–a pair of three year olds–can be dangerous.

I think I’ve finally got it right (5 days into Daylight Savings Time).

This morning presented it’s own set of scheduling dilemmas as I had parking lot duty at the kids’ school. It’s the much less glorified equivalent of a crossing guard. Basically, I stand there with a little orange flag and tell cars to stop and kids to cross praying that I’ve not sent any mixed messages.

The job sounds easy enough and for any normal person should be. However, I’m not a morning person and I’ve got very few (if any) synapses firing at 7:20 in the morning. Coffee is my catecholamine and let’s just say there was a deficiency.

Thankfully, 3rd graders have little heads full of synapses firing on all cylinders at all times and there were no casualties.

However, in the rush to get out of the door this morning Zander and Zella forgot their backpacks. It’s not really a huge deal, they don’t have books or folders that they cart to and from school. Mostly the backpacks carry home whatever coloring pages or finger painting they have done in their two hours of morning preschool and a few cars or toys they have to keep with them at all times.

They were upset none the less.

Upon arrival, Zander announced to his teacher, “Teacher. I’m not going to be able to do any work today.”

“Oh my,” came her reply. “Why not?”

“Because I forgot my backpack.”

“Well Zander, why wouldn’t you be able to do any work just because you forgot your backpack?”

“Because I wouldn’t have any way to bring it home.”

Nice try kid.

I would have loved to try that when I was working in the ER. “I forgot my stethescope. Sorry, not gonna be able to do much work today.”

(They always had extras for just such an occasion.)

A little orange flag? What about an official safety guard belt, one of those bright orange numbers that go around your waist and diagonally across the chest? Stylin’

A belt shows way too much commitment. I just wanted to do my thirty minutes and get some coffee.

He is only in preschool and he’s already coming up with humdinger excuses. You in big trouble.

I used that excuse a few weeks ago. I left my laptop at home. They made me go home and get it. :(
