I’m Kind of Lazy—But Then You Already Knew That
Today will be one of those days remembered for its missed opportunities. I’m not sure if anyone has noticed, I’ve certainly not made mention of it, but I have decided to hop on the proverbial wagon.
Project 365 has been around for a while now. How long? I hear you asking. Long enough. I suppose I could take the time to look into it and find an exact, or at least approximate, answer for you. But I’m not going to do that. That would involve something more than a minimal effort on my part and I’m just not there.
Like my neighbor told me today–I’m a lazy shit. It was good-natured ribbing, at least I hope it was. My neighbor is actually pretty cool. He’s the last male descendant of the family that built our house. 183 years ago! We greet each other at the fence from time to time and discuss meaningless things like neighbors do.
He has no pets of his own but keeps a supply of dog treats in his garage and doles them out to Rusty and Abbey every time he comes or goes. They know his car, can be sitting anywhere in the yard and if they see it, will casually stroll to the gate that separates the two properties. They used to run but have long since learned learned that he will wait for them.
I suppose I could see how some would think him a grumpy, crotchety old man (he’s not really old–60′s maybe) but I’ve always found him pleasant and affable. Always approachable and easy to get along with. He told me in one of our very first conversations that he’s old enough now and at the stage in his life that he doesn’t care what others may think. If he wants to talk to you—he will. Otherwise he’s got better things to do with his day. (We talk constantly.)
Anyway, today we were somehow discussing the buttons in my car that allow me to switch from 4×2 to 4×4. There is also a third button that is labeled 4×4 auto. I have no idea what that one is for and told him as such. He asked if I had the owner’s manual.
“I do.”
“Well look it up you lazy shit!”
I made a joke about it being all the way on the other side of the car and I’d have to actually open the glove box to get to it. How it’s all just a lot of effort and really, I’m just not there.
So like I was saying, Project 365 has been around for a while but I don’t know how long. Maybe Pat will know. He’s just a few days shy of completing his second straight year. Ask him. My point is that I was just waiting to make sure this wasn’t a fad before tossing my hat into the ring.
Which is what I’ve done. I’ve tossed my hat into the ring (not the one Zander puked in) but you get the idea. I am now in the process of taking one photo (at least) every single day for a year and posting it.
I’m halfway through!
The first month.
I’ve set up a page called three six five where I made a little calender and each day I’ll update the it with the current days photo. Clicking on the photo should take you to my Flickr page and the 365 set.
Should.
So let’s get back to where I started. Missed opportunities. We watched a herd of deer, about nine of them, racing across a wide open field on the way home from school. Another field was filled with geese. There were ice covered streams melting in the afternoon sun. Several hawks, an eagle, all manner of birds and farm animals. A myriad of subjects.
I got this.
It’s the only thing I could find that would stay still long enough for me to get a picture!

Ed, you are so good natured. I laughed out loud several times and the lead in to the picture was fab. I hear you on the holding still thing…I have a lot of great shots of inanimate objects too!

I have a feeling I’m going to have a lot more before this thing is over.
Hahahaha Ed! Oh but it IS a FAB sugar bowl!!!!
Your neighbor sounds wonderful… I do believe I am getting to the age where I can say the same thing; I really don’t care anymore what others think of me, and I don’t waste time on fools. Life is just too short.
Best of luck on 365!

Thank you. Pepe and I go way back.
NIIIIIIIIIIIIICE!
I’ll give you my standard bit that I give to anybody starting it.
have fun with it. remember that there is no project 365 police squad to worry about. don’t worry about posting crumby pics. some days are just days. you shoot, post and move on.
i hope you get as much out of it as I have!
what lens you using? that’s a pretty crisp image.

I don’t think anyone is going to have to worry about me posting crumby pics. Take day two for instance…. I pointed the camera at my chin and looked up. It was late and I had no photo.
Oh and the lens. It a Nikkor 18-105mm, the VR one. Helps with my Parkinson’s.
If they do a project 3, perhaps I might do it. Otherwise I am a really lazy shit.
Nice Sugar there Ed.

It gets refilled often.
I know what 4x4auto is, we used to have a Honda CRV with it, but I’m not going to tell you, you’ll have to look it up yourself you lazy shit
And for what its worth, your photo of Pepe le Pew is worth more than any photo of a herd of deer, anyone can take photos of deer, it takes an artist to photograph a sugar bowl, its all in the interpretation.

It sounds good in theory–but to the discerning eye–it’s just a sugar bowl.
And I still have yet to look up what the button does.
You best listen to Pat. He knows his 365. I’ve watched him grow from dabbling in photography to having his own show all because of it. At least that’s how I see it.
