More You

Happy 6th Birthday, my little Curley Sue

Today, the world is yours. Go ahead and scream!!!

Yesterday was a lot like today, but different.  The sunshine made it feel warmer than it probably was.  Bulbs and shoots in every corner of the yard dared to bloom announcing the arrival of spring.  Announcing the arrival…

Chores needed tending.  The marks of winter lay strewn about reminding us that the winter is not only cold, but cruel.  Spring reminds us that there are beginnings.  Renewal.  Life.

I had dared to tackle the yard, to keep at bay acres of green that refused — that refuses — to be limited to a medium-height deck setting.  You reminded me then, as you still do now, that there were more important things.

The lawn could wait.

The fluid that so gently cradled you last week was now gone.  The doc said we could wait, but that he had people ready.  You were ready and made it pretty clear that patience would never be one of your strong suits.

You announced your presence that beautiful spring evening as only you knew how — with volume.  Lots of volume!  Typically, after birth (as had been our prior experience) our babies were taken to the nursery for a quick bath and once over.  Refusing typical you screamed in opposition.  The doctor had yet to stitch the cesarean — your chosen portal of entry — when the phone rang in the OR suite.

“Come get this baby!!!”

I could hear you screaming when I stepped into the hallway through closed double doors halfway down the hall and another closed door at the end, your disdain extremely clear.   And loud.  Not even 10 minutes into the world and you were speaking your mind, making it clear that there were a new set of rules and that you were making them.

Yesterday, I thought my world full.  You taught me how empty it really was.  You taught me about things more important, about how a heart grows beyond what the mind could ever comprehend.  Because you’ve set to filling it more and more with each passing day.  Finding empty in places I thought full and filling them with more laughter, more song, more love, more joy.

More you.

Today is a lot like yesterday — but better.  Because of you, Curly Sue.

Happy Birthday, kid!

share. peace.

    Happy Birthday Little Girl!

I was actually present in the O.R. when both my kids were delivered via C-section. The second time was amazing; I was able to hold my son so that my wife could see him and (sort of) touch him (she was strapped down per normal procedures).

The first time? Not so great. I turned the wrong way at one point and got a view “behind the curtain”. I didn’t pass out, but I was close.

Ed, this was gorgeous. I especially loved “You taught me about things more important, about how a heart grows beyond what the mind could ever comprehend”. You’ve captured it perfectly.

Happy birthday to your darling girl. April babies are great, aren’t they ;) ?

April has the best birthstone — at least for a girl! Though I am kind of partial to the ruby — for selfish reasons, of course.

I think each one of my kids has taught me the lesson of exponential love. And they modify the lessons and add to it with each passing day.
