The Most Best Food Ever!

Zella is our very own Anton Ego.

“I don’t like that.”

Her typical critique offered at almost every meal.

Regardless.

There’s no go-to meal with the kid. One day she might ask for seconds or even thirds of a serving of Mac and Cheese. The next time you serve it — nothing.

“What part don’t you like, Zella?” Ive asked.

(And then making a gesture with her tiny little arm she starts at the top of the plate,) “From here … (and in a sweeping motion brings the arm across the plate to the bottom) … “to here!”

She has made an evening meal out of a pea and a spoonful of ketchup.

One pea!!

And while Zella may quite be the worst of my culinary snobs, she’s certainly not the only one. In fact, all of my kids display varying degrees of Anton-ness. It makes meal preparation as Casa de Ed such a treat. Seriously. I toss out enough picked over, half eaten and rejected food each week to make a Vegas buffet.

So when someone from Hillshire Farms contacted me last week and offered to send me some samples of their Beef Smoked Sausage and Polska Kielbasa I jumped at the opportunity. Hell, if I’m going to toss out uneaten food it might as well be free food.

They were even kind enough to send a cookbook chock full of quick and easy to prepare recipes. Two of my favorite recipe ingredients, quick and easy.

A quick scan of the book and I picked what I thought would appeal universally to the kids, the Tortilla Chip Lasagna. It’s got chips, sausage and cheese. It’s the trinity of kid cuisine.

I left out the kidney beans because, well, I didn’t have any. (I also do not like kidney beans — probably the reason I did not have any on hand.) I was also out of black olives, so they were omitted as well. (I like black olives, not sure my kids would so it’s just as well.)

From start to finish it took about 25 minutes to prepare the dish.

It took my kids about 10 minutes to devour it!

They attacked that Beef Smoked Sausage like a pack of wolves. It didn’t stand a chance. Literally it was a feeding frenzy. Arms and elbows were flying at breakneck speeds to get as much food shoved into their faces as quickly as possible.

And as Zella, my little Anton, finished her last bite she placed her fork down and simply stated, “That was the most best food ever!”

Ball-DA-chee (I Think It’s Italian for Best Seller)

David Baldacci has written 17 consecutive New York Times Best Sellers. He has sold books in over 80 countries in 45 languages with upwards of 90 million copies of his works currently in print. This once lawyer from Virginia turned murder/mystery novelist is a machine!

David Baldacci sells books. Great books. Books filled with pages. Pages of suspense and mystery. His characters draw you in and leave you wanting more. Some less. So why, you may be asking yourselves, would David Baldacci need a lowly blogger such as myself singing praises for his newest novel True Blue?

Honestly, he doesn’t. I just told you, the dude sells books. But he doesn’t give them away.

I do!!

That’s right, dear reader. The good folks over at Hachette Book Group have provided me with an advance copy of Mr. Baldacci’s latest and I am offering it to one of you. All you’ve got to do is leave a comment to the effect of, “Gee, Ed. That’s one of the nicest things I’ve heard all morning and I’d be delighted to be considered as a possible candidate to receive a copy of David Baldacci’s newest thriller True Blue.” Or you could just say, “Ooh, pick me!”

The L Word

There was a drawing. An unceremonious selection of two. There was no band, no cameras, no shouts of joy and no fanfare. Just a random selection of two names. There really were no losers–just quite a few people who did not win. It’s a fine line, but a distinction worthy of noting.

I’ve Got the Answers

Many of you may have read about this contest over at Whit’s place. What? Who’s Whit? I’m not quite sure that question deserves an answer, rather a swift slap across the face and quite possibly some spittle in the eye! Whit’s the man–he says so himself. Anyway, seems Whit has offered a little contest to all five of his readers that offers not one, not two, not three—it goes on–but eleven books. Real books with pages that are made of real paper (I can only assume paper as I have not actually seen these books myself, nor do I have actual proof that the books are real–but why would Whit lie?).

All you have to do is answer a few simple multiple choice questions, compose a short essay and in no fewer than ten words (no more either) describe why Whit is the man. I’m about to give you the opportunity of a lifetime. Why? Because I care. It’s what I do. I’m a carer..er type of caring person that cares about things and people. Really, I do. I’m not only going to give you the answers to Whit’s little questionnaire but, by commenting here, I’m going to make you eligible to win Whit’s contest.
